Another year, another NaNoWriMo.
For those who don’t know, NaNoWriMo is short for “National Novel Writing Month.” It is a month-long (obviously) writing competition that has been held for several years now.
In this competition, the rules are very simple… write at least 50,000 words. That’s it. That’s how you win. You don’t have to write more words than someone else, or better words, or get more work published, or any of that; no, for this month you are competing against yourself. Because NaNoWriMo is all about committing to getting those words written, nothing more, nothing less.
You can find out more of the official details on their website, NaNoWriMo.org
Me, I’ve won every year since I first joined in 2010, including last year when I worked two part-time jobs and three years I was working towards a Master’s degree. Barely won each time, and plenty of people have written way more than I have, but I have won all the same. I see no reason why, even working quasi-full-time now, I shouldn’t be able to win again.
But remember, meeting the word count and actually finishing a project are two completely different goals. And with that point in mind, for this year’s NaNo I am once again rebelling by trying to finish my pirate novel “The Graft”…. amid far too many fanfics that are competing for my attention.
Whelp, I’ve finally got a new keyboard for my new phone. Not the case I would’ve preferred, but maybe I can get some writing done during lunch breaks. Enough to get a decent word count in there, anyway. Wish me luck on actually finishing the novel this time around…. not to mention coming up with something suitable for cover art.
You can check my (free) progress on The Graft’s prologue on my secondary site Pioneers of the Shattered Waters, as well as on my Patreon where I intend to post later chapters in a patron-only feed until the whole novel is done.
Now that I’m a little better informed on text-based posts, perhaps I’ll be able to make better headway on that patron feed and actually keep it updated.
And the fanfiction? Well, that’s on deviantArt, fanfiction.net, and Archive of Our Own. My interests vary, but my current projects are Flash/Legends of Tomorrow fics, focusing on the character of Leonard Snart/Captain Cold.
