The Plagiarists–Prologue

Just a draft, nothing more, of the prologue to an idea that’s been rattling around in my head.
You might have seen it up on deviantArt.

A long time ago, the world was at war. Nations sought newer and better weapons to surpass their enemies; they developed what they could, and stole what they could not.

Some began to experiment with psychic spies. These spies found enemy targets, tracked down hostages, and acquired information from the enemy.

Time passed, some wars ended and others began, old alliances broken and new alliances forged. Those in charge declared that the research was mere superstition. These “psychic spies” were not accurate enough, they’d said, to justify the resources to continue, and these projects were shut down.

Or so the world believed.

For a time, the projects continued in secret, above top secret, that even the host nations did not know of them. Those who knew were participants, or were accused of conspiracy theory by those who lacked that knowledge.

As these things go, this research was eventually exposed to the public. But not as a military application.

The research found its way into the public eye as a resource for medicine, business, and even entertainment. It became yet another thing that the world took for granted.

And like all things we take for granted, we do not know as much as we tell ourselves; we are not as safe as we would like to believe.

For knowledge had become a commodity. Thoughts and ideas were products that could literally be bought and sold; they left nothing of themselves behind with the original owner.

And what can be sold can also be stolen….

This is, for all purposes, the first draft of this prologue.
If and when I actually do anything with this idea, I will edit this post. Or post a new one. 😉
